Along the coast of Santiago del Teide, a broad promenade, bright with flower-laden planters, leads to an award-winning beach of typically soft black sand ringed with palm trees. Opposite, a parade of shops to browse in, bars and restaurants, and welcoming pavement cafes.
Stay a while to sip your coffee or try the syrupy banana liqueur as you gaze out to sea and ponder the prospect of a boat trip to the island of La Gomera.
Nearby, visit the remote village of Masca or the historic Canarian towns of La Orotava, which has an interesting embroidery school (good for souvenirs) and La Laguna, which has a cathedral with fine stained glass windows, an attractive old town and a colourful morning market. Walk and picnic in the forest of La Esperanza, visit an ostrich farm, botanical gardens, ancient pyramids, or ecological Parque Las Aquilas.
Playa de la Arena boasts a good range of restaurants covering a variety of cuisines.
