On the south-western coast of the island, this one-time fishing village has blossomed into a town that combines its traditional Canarian charm with a distinctly cosmopolitan influence.
Discovered by discerning visitors from many countries, Los Gigantes remains exclusively apart from the noise and bustle of Tenerife's crowded resorts.
Los Gigantes is the Spanish word for, you guessed it, 'The Giants'. The name of the village originates from the size of the volcanic cliffs, which range from around 900 to 1800 feet. These cliffs were formed by thousands of volcanic eruptions, and shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, through a time span of millions of years.
The little beach of black volcanic sand is cosseted by cliffs and the clear waters are excellent for snorkelling. The marina is lined with bars and restaurants and the nightlife here is low-key and relaxing. This is a good base for exploring more of Tenerife including a trek through the incredible scenery of the Masca Valley and a trip to the near-by flag-winning beach of Puerto de Santiago. Los Gigantes is also the harbour for boat trips. You can choose from fun in the sun pleasure cruises along the cliff-fringed coast or get adventurous and go whale-watching. Do bear in mind that some of the roads here are very steep and so are unsuitable for the less mobile.
